The length of cystic acne therapy varies. I think the standard therapy session is
four months. Some people will require another session, though. But it is definitely not a long-term treatment. Virtually everyone with cystic acne
will benefit greatly from Accutane, but if they don't respond within 2 or 3
sessions, something else will be tried.
My sister had really bad Cystic Acne. Her entire face was like one big
lesion. She took one session of Accutane, and yes, it cured her
permanently. She had her treatment something like 15 years ago, and her
skin is still beautiful. Doctors warned her that she might need
dermabrasion for the scarring, and silicon injections for the pitting, but
amazingly enough, she had no scarring. Over time (a few years), the pits
filled out, and the scars faded. She truly has a peaches and cream
complexion now. She doesn't even have to wear foundation.
One or two words of caution- if you are TTC, don't take accutane- it can damage
a fetus or cause miscarriage. Also, if you are like me and have high
triglycerides and cholesterol, you won't be able to take accutane- the doctor
will take a blood test before prescibing accutane to make sure.
